Confusion

The Latin words at the root of our English word ‘confusion’ mean ‘to pour together.’

If you pour together too many colours of paint, you end up with a sludgey brown. Yuck.

Yet what is sludgey brown but brown sludge, and what is brown sludge but mud, and what is mud but damp soil, and what is damp soil but fecund profundity?
