I’m perturbed by the gap between what is legal and what is fair. The police secured a warrant to search my friend’s house. It entitled them to break down the front door, causing hundreds of pounds of damage that my friend cannot afford, with no obligation to provide compensation. This is legal. But is it fair?
Two months ago, I was summoned for jury service. I served on one jury in which the majority of jurors swiftly found the defendant guilty of the intent to steal because he was addicted to drugs at the time and he’d done that kind of thing before so of course he was going to do it again. This is the criminal justice system. But is it fair?
It seems to me that the disparity between legality and fairness widens the further down the socio-economic spectrum you go. Is this fair?
